The L.M. Montgomery Institute (LMMI) hosts a biennial conference that brings together scholars and fans from around the world to share, celebrate, and learn about Montgomery. The conference takes place on the grounds of the University of Prince Edward Island and registration is open to all. The upcoming conference theme is “L.M. Montgomery and Re-vision,” and the event will take place from June 22 to 26, 2022.

Responding to the question “What are you excited for when you return to PEI?” Natália Dukátová from Slovakia answered, “Mostly, I want to go the conference again. See all those people, be in that unique atmosphere.” Having attended the L.M. Montgomery Institute conferences twice, claiming they were “just AMAZING!” Dukátová captures the excitement and comradery that the conferences provide Montgomery enthusiasts.

The conference wonderfully displays the vast and ever-growing scholarship on Montgomery; the proximity to the north shore Montgomery grew up on and the landscape that inspired her writing also contribute to the conference’s success.
Carolyn Strom Collins (Minnesota, USA) illustrates how the LMMI conference displays Prince Edward Island’s attractions:

The conference showcases PEI’s attractions nicely, especially with the opportunity to take part in the bus tour at the end of the conference proceedings. Travelling from Charlottetown through the countryside to Kensington, Park Corner, French River, New London, Stanley Bridge and Cavendish with stops along the way to see sites most meaningful to Montgomery (the railroad station in Kensington, “Silver Bush,” The Lake of Shining Waters, her Grandfather Montgomery’s home, LMM’s birthplace, “Carmody,” “Green Gables,” the Macneill Homestead, etc.) with a crowd of Montgomery afficionados is very special. (See [here] for a “Virtual Tour of Prince Edward Island.”)

Julie Sellers (Kansas, USA) shared a similar experience of the LMMI conference:

In 2018, my husband and I returned to the Island for the LMMI conference. (This time, I required him to read the novel [Anne of Green Gables], and he enjoyed it.) After a fantastic experience at the conference, we joined the bus tour of attendees visiting Montgomery’s birthplace, Silver Bush, her Cavendish Home, and Green Gables. Visiting those spaces and moments with other kindred spirits was an unforgettable and unique opportunity to share our individual stories about our relationships with Montgomery’s works ... As I anticipate returning for the LMMI conference in 2022, I look forward to learning and sharing with attendees, and above all, to walking those simple paths through the palette of colors that paints Maud’s homeland and my own memories, imagined and concrete, of her enchanted Island.

Although the date for submitting a proposal to present at the conference has passed, the LMMI still encourages you to attend and partake in the panels, conversations, and events (such as the north shore tour, pre-conference workshops, and evening entertainment) that will occur at the LMMI 2022, “L.M. Montgomery and Re-vision” conference.

A trip to Prince Edward Island will never leave you disappointed if you can take time to experience the simple joy that comes from appreciating the “tall slender firs along the moist red road” (Montgomery, SJ 1: 350).
